On peut considérer qu’il y a deux types de stencilistes de part le monde : (1) ceux qui se baladent avec des gabarits et des bombes et puis (2) ceux qui se trimballent avec des affiches et de la colle. Les autorités qui nous aiment et nous protègent vous diront que les deux catégories de zozos sont des nuisances mais que les seconds occasionnent moins de dégâts aux façades et que c’est une bonne nouvelle. Nous, et bien nous dirons que les affiches tendent effectivement à se décoller plus facilement mais que ce n’est pas une bonne nouvelle car les œuvres pochoiresques ainsi exposées sont encore plus éphémères que celles peintes directement sur les murs … Quoi qu’il en soit, en vélocipédant pendant les beaux mois d’été de merde que nous avons eus, nous sommes tombés sur les pochoirs d’Atipical Danish dans la rue des Chartreux. Nous lui avons demandé par messagerie électronique de nous parler un peu de lui et de son travail. C’est parti :
Hi, Atipical Danish ! Would you please tell us a bit about yourself and your background ?
I am from Spain, from the Canary Islands. My training is as director of photography and I have three years of practice in the art department of Zentropa Productions, the company created by Lars von Trier in Copenhagen. I have always dreamed of going to Denmark because I love the films from there … Then I decided to go into graffiti because I have always been kind of a rebel … I like provoking and the street is just the best place for that ! I am always teasing everyone, I like to have fun all the time … I have always liked graffiti although, actually, I started graffiti stencils quite late myself, at the age of 21. Banksy was obviously a revelation for me. As for my name, it came first as a joke with my friends in Spain so when I moved to Denmark, I didn’t really feel danish … The name was perfect for me ! As everyone around there knows, I am everything but danish !
Sounds great ! Would you now explain why you prefer paste-up stencils over sprayed-on-wall stencils ?
Well, I prefer paste-up stencils because it is fast and easy to move around with them, especially when you are travelling abroad or even walking around in your own city. Now I walk with folded papers in my bag, a brush and a bottle of glue. Easy to go ! And also, if something goes wrong in the process of putting them up, I just have to take the paper down and leave … This happened to me before … Without going to court for it !
Good point ! So, what about Brussels ?
I went to Brussels to visit one of my best friends who just moved there. I was amazed by all the street art you have in Brussels … I didn’t expect it at all ! It even seemed as if there were more things on the walls than in Amsterdam ! I think Brussels is going really up for graffiti art right now and I am planning to come back soon, better prepared ! In the meantime, I plan to spend a few months back in the Canary Islands to enjoy the sun and to paint all over the place … Over there, if you paint something they like, they even give you permission for it !

Nous, on se dit ici qu’il faut être un peu zinzin pour un Espagnol d’aller vivre au Danemark mais, bon, on n’est pas là pour juger non plus (n’empêche …) Et puis comme Bruxelles se trouve juste pile-poil sur le chemin entre les deux, nous aurons certainement l’occasion de revoir notre artiste et ses affiches stencilées dans nos rues . Et ça, c’est une excellente nouvelle ! Alors, à très bientôt, Atipicos Danés !
