Was it easy to convince these twenty worldwide famous artists to contribute original stencils to your book ?
In fact, yes ! Once we had explained to them the idea behind the book, they were all very enthusiastic about it and backed the idea 100 %. The way they looked at this was : The art is not exclusive, it is inclusive ... And by giving people the tools, they can then spread the word and become part of the art.
Is there a difference between a stencil painted by its author him/herself and the same stencil painted by someone else ?
Well, actually, everytime you use a stencil, the outcome will be different ... No matter who sprays it ! There is art in designing and cutting a stencil and art in how and where it is sprayed up. As long as people don't claim someone's else stencil to be their own, it is OK. Don't forget that the original artist can't be everywhere in the world but his disciples can !
Any second thought about the fact that the templates in your book were cut using a laser whereas most artists cut their own stencils by hand ?
Hand cutting or laser cutting was discussed with many of the artists. Some artists indeed develop a very distinctive hand when cutting a stencil ... But some others already use laser technology ! It is a personal choice. In our case we had no other alternative than to laser them. There is no right or wrong, better or worse.
